The book attempts to deconstruct the history of the period to become a riveting tale of India, itself, straddling India, Japan and South Asia; involving the giants of the times and the stuff of history texts that comes alive through the pen of Anand Mohan Sahay. It is a fascinating description of two diametrically opposite ideas of Gandhi and Netaji in India, just prior to independence, and in Japan and South Asia before the Second World War. It also gives us an insider’s view of the struggles of the time. Gandhi, Rajendra Prasad, Nehru, Netaji among others - are all described with humor and a directness that brings historical figures alive. Simultaneously, the Indian Diaspora in Japan at the time is captivatingly told.

The book also contains telling illustrations of the times, as excerpted from Asha’s Diary written by ex-Lt. Bharati Choudhry ‘Asha’ of INA’s Rani of Jhansi Regiment. She is also one of the daughters of the author and the main compiler of the book. The excerpts provide fascinating personalized observations.
